(i have not yet loaded any custom roms/apps (still unsure if i am going to at all, only had the phone a few weeks) so these questions pertain to the standard/stock fb app preloaded in sense)

the screen refuses to rotate in fb like it does in text/email/etc. is this normal for the stock fb app?

Yes.  There are many applications on the HD2 that don't rotate.  But, I do recall reading something about editing the system registry to rotate Facebook specifically.  xda developers has a page on that, I think?
