HTCHD2Forum.com - How to install a cab

A CAB file will be associated with WinRar (or whatever archiver you have) by default. Many new WM users think they should open the archive and extract everything and run the _setup.xml file.
That is not the way to do it.

Copy the CAB file itself to the phone and when you tap it it will start installing. DO NOT extract the files.

Great tutorial, thanks! I'm gonna appear greedy but could you possibly do a video where you show how to use a registry editor, like the TotalCommander, on the HD2? Unsure on how it works and just havent got the guts to do it.

Hey guys, I'm trying to install cab files for the first time but am having a hard time even after watching the video above.

The apps I want to install are:

TCPMP
Duttys_Task_Manager
Touch_X_1_percent_battery
Vovichek_Jamrecords_20shcut

I have downloaded the rar files and unpacked them into folders containing a bunch of small files. And then what??? Is it one specific file I must transfer to the phone's memory card or the whole folder or...?

Any help is greatly appreciated  Roll Eyes

Those are not rar files. Those are .cab files that are associated with winrar or whatever archiver you have. Just copy the cab files themselves on the phone and when you access them they will self extract and start installing.

Thanks for the prompt reply Lorin!

I also just noticed the brief text at the top of this topic explaining that I should not unpack the cab files. I missed it the first couple of times...

Anyway, just transferred everything and it all seems to be working!

Thanks again!

Microsoft in my opinion missed the boat on file extensions. Because common file extension are hidden by default on Windows computers it makes it difficult to identify the format of the file sometimes. Cab and RAR files will look the same.

Open up windows explorer on pc. Selest 'Tools' then 'folder options' and then 'view'. Then remove the checkmark in 'Hide extensions for known file types' then apply and ok. Now all your extensions will be visable and tou will not mistake cab and rar files again. In my opinion this should be unchecked by default.

That's why i stay away from the file explorer as much as i can. I don't use the regular file explorer on my phone either Smiley I need more options, so i use total commander and resco explorer.

device means it will eat that little space you have on your phone and storage means it will eat a tiny amount of whatever your sd card is.
the only apps i put on the device are the ones that change the phone and are not apps which need to be opened.

I think its best that apps that work with the phone's filesystem should be installed on the phone(device). For speed and stability.  Games and normal apps could be installed on the card. Some cab files must be installed to the device to work properly. Net framework 3.5 should be installed to the device. I also installed the resco suite to the device.
