think there are a few ways.
microsoft my phone will upload your contacts to the internet.
outlook will back up onto your PC.
spb back up and other third party back ups will create back ups which can be stored on the storage card.

i'm happy with microsoft my phone as i don't need to back up data, just contacts.

For information...
One important thing regarding battery is what application on your phone you use.
If phone only is used, battery will work for 3-4 days(if you not use it to ring whole day long).
When GPS is used, GPS use a lot of battery and decrase time before battery charge is needed.
WLAN also use a lot of battery, tur it of when not needed. Same with TomTom application or GPS reqired tools.

I use my HD2 quite a lot (phone, web, email..) and normally it last from 8am to midnight. I found that when the facebook client running in the background, it drains the battery very fast. So close it if when you don't use it to save your battery life.
