One of the most requested things by the new owners and wm noobs is what to do first when you get the phone. So here is a guide on what to do when you first start your newly purchased HD2.

Note: Some of the steps are conditional and may be skipped in case some situation does not apply to you. The order is not mandatory but recommended. The steps below do not always go into detail so in case you have questions about one please search the forum, because most probably there’s a thread regarding that already. All applications that I mention here can be found by using Google. In case I feel that the specific cab file can’t be found easily i will upload it here. Also note that these steps are general and apply to all the versions of the HD2.

For TMOUS HD2 specific tips look in the second post.

For “how to” videos on how to install a cab file, how to save space on “My Device” and how to work with registries please read here.

STEPS:

1. Setup the data connection (in case it hasn’t been configured automatically) by going to the Settings tab – Menu – All Settings – Connections – Connections.

2. Setup Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, email accounts, cities and weather.

3. Install Active Sync (Win XP) or Mobile Device Center (Vista and 7) from here.

4. Import your contacts, text messages, calendar appointments, bookmarks, tasks (from a previous phone or outlook) and setup favorite people.

5. Setup a Wi-Fi connection.

6. Setup alarms (on the Home tab click the clock and move to the second tab).

7. Setup the home screen wallpaper (Home tab – Menu – Home Wallpaper) and the lock screen (and start menu) wallpaper (Settings tab – Personalize – Lock screen wallpaper). Get more wallpapers from here.

8. Chose the Sense tabs order (Settings tab – Personalize – Home Screen tabs)

9. Setup regional settings (Settings tab – Locale & Text – Regional)

10. Setup sound profile, volume, ringtones, notification, vibration, backlight, quiet ring on pickup and pocket mode (Settings tab – Sounds & Display)

11. Use the sync/charge cable and connect the phone to the pc by using the storage mode. Copy your music, photos, documents, application cabs and other files to the storage card.

12. Setup a favorite album in the Pictures tab.

13. After the library has been updated (a reset might be required) organize your music into playlists in the Music tab.

14. Add the stocks you follow.

15. Add bookmarks to the Internet tab

16. Install a better file explorer (Resco File Explorer, Total Commander) from here.

17. Install a registry editor (Resco Registry Editor, Total Commander, CeRegEditor) from here.

18. Install .net Compact Framework 3.5 from here.

19. Install the apps you desire (using the newly installed file explorer, go to your storage card and run the cab files you copied at step 10).

20. Organize the start menu by going into “\Windows\Start menu\Programs\” Here you can create folders and move icons. Some icons are hidden so make sure you make them visible first.

21. Change the ugly icons with better ones by using an icon changer app (reStart, JWMD Icon Changer) and the iReflect icon pack and the drik icon pack.

22. Install a task manager (Duttys Task Manager for Leo, Touch X Taskmanager, e-Natives Showcase). Google search for site:xda-developers.com Duttys Task Manager for Leo, site:xda-developers.com Touch X Taskmanager and site:xda-developers.com e-Natives Showcase.

23. Enable hidden default games.
Go to the Windows directory and copy bubblebreaker.exe and solitaire.exe to the games folder as shortcuts in Windows\Start Menu. Make sure to unhide system files on the device to see the games listed.

24. Using the registry editor:
Enable website thumbnails when navigating back in Opera
Go to HKLM\Software\Opera\Info and change EnableVisualBack from 0 to 1. Press back key and use gestures to go back pages.

25. Using the registry editor:
Increase the resolution of back thumbnails
Go to HKLM\Software\Opera\Prefs\User Prefs and change History Thumbnail Size from 128 to 512.

26. Using the registry editor:
Increase the number of Opera tabs
Go to HKLM\Software\Opera\Prefs\User Prefs and change Maximum Allowed Tabs from 3 to say 9 (or any number)

27. Using the registry editor:
Enable hidden Owner Info in All Settings\Personal folder
Go to HKLM\ControlPanel\Owner and change Hide from 1 to 0 and then reset. You can now enter your name you want to register old apps.

28. Using the registry editor:
Activate hidden photo modes
You can activate two hidden photo modes by using the following registry tweaks and then reset:

To enable Video Share mode:
Go to HKLM\Software\HTC\Camera\P9
set "Enable" to "1"

To enable GPS Photo mode:
Go to HKLM\Software\HTC\Camera\P10
set "Enable" to "1"

29. Using the registry editor:
Change quicklink display names
If you don't like your quicklinks display names being truncated and looking like for example "Resco Regi.." and would prefer it look like "Reg Edit" then you can edit the display names here: HKLM/Software/HTC/Manila/Home/x then edit the DispName.
(x = the quicklink position)

30. Using the registry editor:
Real exit for HTC Album
By default, when you click on the OK/X button in HTC Album, the app minimizes, it does not exit. Make the following change to really exit the app and thus save some program memory: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\HTC\HTCAlbum\"ok_minimize" = dword:0

31. Using the registry editor:
Enable clickable links in zoomed out Opera.
This registry edit allows you to tap on a link without the need for zooming in first.
HKLM/Software/Opera/Info/az_overview_threshold
Change value from 64 to 32

32. Using the registry editor:
Speed up web page loading considerably.
The following registry tweak will enable almost instantaneous web page loading in the web browser. It apparently enables wireless N mode. Go to:
HKLM/Comm/BCMSDDHD1/Parms/11nModeDisable = Change from 1 to 0

33. Using the registry editor:
Enable magnifying box when selecting text
Press and hold your finger on any text in a HTC app such as Messaging and an iphone-esque selection procedure with handles to drag and highlight text will appear. Modify the following registry entry to add a magnifying window as you select and highlight the text. Go to:
HKLM/Software/HTC/TextSelection/EnableMagnifier and change from 0 to 1.

34. Using the registry editor:
Hide reappearing HTC icons from Start Menu.
If you delete the HTC shortcuts to Peep, People, Messaging etc and reset, they always come back. To hide these shortcuts for good (not the apps just the shortcuts) use the tweak below.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\HTC\Manila\IsShortcutEnable
Change to 0 and soft reset. You may need to change their shortcut's properties to hidden by accessing them in Windows/Start Menu/Programs folder.

35. Using the registry editor:
Prevent accidental link activation when scrolling
Do you scroll and find you accidentally click on something? This tweak is for you.
HKLM/System/GWE/Touch/Filter/Minimumtaptime
Change from 0 to 30

36. Using the registry editor:
Enable more than 10 URL thumbnail shortcuts on Internet tab
By default you only get 10 shortcuts to your favorite websites on the internet tab. Now you can have as many as you want (multiples of 2) or even less than 10 if you so wish.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\HTC\Manila\Internet.CountOfPush
Change from 10 to 12 or 14 or 16 or 18 etc etc

37. Using the registry editor:
Disable unwanted folders from showing in HTC Album
Don't you find it annoying that HTC Album Shows lots of images you don't need to see when you select Albums like GPS poi icons? Now you can tell HTC Album to ignore certain folders.
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/HTC/HTCAlbum/Ignored and add a NEW STRING VALUE
Eg if there is iGO8 in the root of the Storage Card you would create a NEW STRING VALUE with Value name iGO8 and Value Data \Storage Card\iGO8
This will include all subfolders inside the iGO8 folder. Save and reset.

38. Using the registry editor:
Improve performance and speed in Opera
Increase scrolling speed while browsing by using this tweak:
HKLM\Software\Opera\Info\PanFps=50

Increase the speed of zooming in on a web page by using this tweak:
HKLM\Software\Opera\Info\ZoomFps=50

Increase the font cache for displaying text quicker by using this tweak:
HKLM\Software\Opera\Info\fontcachesize change from 32 to 64

39. For HTC Sense tweaks read here.

40. If you don’t want some audio files to appear in the HTC Audio Manager’s library go into the file explorer, find the audio files and make them hidden. Don't worry. Your games and apps will still be able to use them. The files are accessed by path not by attributes.

41. Schedule automatic backups of your contacts, appointments, emails, text messages and tasks using a backup app like Microsoft My Phone or PIM Backup (attached to this post, just copy it to the phone, run it, select "Create Shortcut" from the Menu so you can access it from the start menu).

42. Using the registry editor:
Make the GPS faster
Under: HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\GPS Intermediate Driver\
Drivers\GpsOneDevice\PollInterval -> 100(default is 1000)
Drivers\InputBufferSize -> 512 (default is 4096)
Drivers\OutputBufferSize -> 512 (default is 4096)
Drivers\SleepOnNoData -> 100 (default is 1000)
Multiplexer\MaxBufferSize -> 512 (by default not present, you have to create it)
