Hi Sunil, great app by the way, much faster than the MP4forHD app i used from xda dev.

one problem though, i converted a bdrip which was full screen, mp4forhd converted this with a full screen but winavi mp4 converted this with the black bars on the top and bottom of the screen, any idea how i get rid of the bars, i left the source aspect ratio on auto as i though it would have kept the ratio as the original source, does it need to be on 4:3 or 16:9?

mp4forhd most likely converted it slightly more zoomed in that winAVI. so it looks like it reaches all the edges but it cuts off the edges slightly.
may not be like that but i think it is, check to see if some of the screen gets cut off on the same video at the same time. (easily noticeable if you use a video with a tv channel watermark in the corner)

Out of interest, why would you convert a 365MB avi to a 348MB mp4?

avi & mp4 are just containers. I could understand converting if you are reducing the size more than that. Presumably that is a ~40min TV episode, so around 1500Kbps - the HD2 will handle that fine.

If anyone is converting HD material down to WVGA, I would recommend using MediaCoder. It's free and fast (utilises up to 16 cores!).

I've been getting some very nice results with these settings.:

Format: H.264
Mode: Average bitrate @ 1200Kbps
x264 Profile: Baseline (Important for mobile spec of H264)
Audio format: AAC
Audio encoder: FAAC
Audio mode: Average bitrate @128Kbps
Container: MP4
Resize: 800x450 (for 16:9, lower height accordingly for other aspect ratios)
Aspect ratio: Set PAR 1:1

cool i've not tried that, i'll give it a try out Smiley

the reason why i mentioned the size is because different converters compress the files into different sizes, so just letting you know not to expect this converter to compress as much as others.

the reason for the avi > mp4 is because the player will only play mp4.

Ah, I see  Smiley

That's a shame then that Video Launcher only supports mp4, because the HTC Media Player supports avi and others too.

If you don't want to change the size/resolution/quality of a video but just want to convert to mp4 so that Video Launcher will recognise it, then MediaCoder will be much quicker. You can set it to copy the audio and video without converting it at all, but just change the avi container to an mp4 container. It will literally only take a few seconds to do that.

Hi guys, just got my htc hd2 and loving this forum, loads of help that has kept me occupied playing around with the settings etc...

However, I cant seem to get a mp4 to play after installing video launcher. I have converted the file using the win avi programme and then when I click on the file in my phone the screen just goes black . . . .any ideas ?

The file is installed on the sd card and I created a video folder to put it in,

Thanks

that is weird, did you set the resolution on the converter to 800x480?

can you try reinstall the video launcher on your device please, can't tell why you are having an issue :S hopefully it is just something you missed out.

hi , interesting posts which helped me no end, im a newbie to hd2 having sold my iphone to experiment with one. one thing im not clear on is can the hd2 actually play video in full screen with no black bars top and bottom?
i am using winavi and video launcher ( i also have coreplayer ) and the res is set to 800x480 but still have screen to spare.  if i increase the height in settings when converting to more than 480 what will happen?

hope you can all clarify.

i don't think you can remove the black lines (alone). something to do with aspect ratios.
some players will remove those black bars, but what you won't notice is that some of the edges will have been cut off as the image is zoomed in to cut the black bars. i only noticed it when i played something with a channel logo.
i don't know what will happen if you change the res size. it won't screw up the phone, and if it does you'd just need a soft reset and delete the video. so try it if you want and let us know Smiley

how does viewing pleasure differ from the iphone? :p

Hi Sunil, I defo made sure I put the correct settings in height and width. Installed the Video launcher twice from two seperate downloads, and also tried two different video files. I even tried two different converters . . . . . .All resulting in a black screen (even though when I fire up video launcher I can see the thumbnail of the video I want to watch Huh)

Does it make a difference on the original video format Huh

They original files are divx files, streamed from ninjavideo or stagevu, then saved to my computer Huh

Thanks in advance

I've got a couple of files saved from ninjavideo so just converting now, but winAVI didn't support .divx so that is most likely the problem.

i just converted and transferred, and it works :s
i have no idea what is up with yours. try a different player such as coreplayer and see if it works.
i don't know why it isn't working for just you. maybe something up with your device and video playback.

I have carefully read all the thred and duly downloaded the suggested "video launcher.cab" but I still can't find a solution to my problem which is this:

I have downloaded a few vids using Realplayer but when I transferred the files to my HD2 mem card (as expected) they will not play because they should be converted to a format compatible with the HD2 (i guess mp4 ?).
Can you please suggest me a (possibly free) video file converter to install on my W7 ultimate PC capable of converting my video files to a format that the HD2 will be willing to play with?

One more thing:
Can I install the video launcher .cab on the mem card instead of the main memory?
After I installed CoPilot for Europe there's not a lot of space left on my beloved HD2's memory.

Thanx very much for your help and ypur precious suggestions.

Sunil, think I have figured it out . . . . .

I recorded a video on my phone which then wouldn't play back either so it was a prob with the device.

Basically you cant playback video on your phone if you have installed the youtube app. I uninstalled it and restarted the phone and sure enough video playback works fine, I haven't transfered over the converted mp4 yet but I'm guessing it will work now.

From what I have read on another forum there is an "official youtube app" that you can download from http://m.google.co.uk/youtube?dc=gyt

which is supposed to run the youtube app without affecting video playback on the phone.

Will give it a go and let you guys know what happens

well it must have been my source video as i tried another in my collection and that pretty much filled the entire screen, with no picture loss. as for comparisons to the iphone, i have just realised how simple the iphone was, i think iphone owners forget that though its a wonderful device and does many great things simply and has lots of great apps ( i had over 80 ) you cant do anything else. its not a computer if anything the apps make the phone and not the other way round . whereas the htc is a pc/phone first and foremost. i love it and it will take me forever to figure other things out but thats why i love pc's .
if i have an unlocked phone as in it has been unlocked from network , how come i cant upgrade roms officially thru htc site.

@ Plexus

the posted converter, in the first post, should work. try it and if it doesn't google for "*your media extension* to mp4 converter" *your media extension* = the file type.

should be able to install the video launcher on the Memory card, install it there and if it doesn't work just reinstall on the device.

@ Djhackett

ah ok, i didn't know of that error so thanks for providing others with the info.

@ Reesie

ok, my videos usually have about 3mm black bars at top and bottom, doesn't bother me though the screen is massive as it is.

hehe the iphone is simple, but that is the attraction for alot of people. i love to mess around and also am anti-apple for my devices.

unlocked via your network provider means you can put a different network sim card in the phone.
de-branding is what you need. i haven't done it and have no clue on how to go about it, but hopefully ago will be here soon, he has done it and knows alot about that.
